Team MentorMate Cheers on Be the Match 5K Participants

There was a lot to celebrate Saturday, May 16, especially the early birds who woke up to run, walk or cheer on participants at the annual Be the Match 5K. The Minneapolis-based nonprofit Be the Match®, formerly known as the National Bone Marrow Donor Program, manages the registry responsible for pairing donors with patients who need life-saving transplants.

The MentorMate team supported the event in force. Some employees ran, and others handed out drawstring bags to the many community members who participated.

Before the event, participants heard the story of one young recipient who, thanks to his life-saving transplant, plans to grow up and become a superhero. All attendees applauded as survivors took the stage before the run and raised their arms in a show of solidarity for those who bested their illnesses and those who are remembered for their courage.

Be the Match is a critical tool. Over 70% of the patients who need a bone marrow transplant do not find a donor in their immediate family.

Participants could fundraise and run in teams or as individuals. One team raised over $23,000 for the cause. One hundred percent of the event proceeds help add new potential marrow donors to the registry, support patients struggling with uninsured costs and fund additional research.

We were proud to see lots of blue MentorMate backpacks crossing the finish line as runners supported and raised awareness for such a meaningful cause.
